Training

Whether you're new to diving and need to learn the basics, or have been diving for years and want to take on some new challenges, SUSAC strives to meet all it's member's needs to make all it's diving fun, safe and accessible to all.

For all club members, SUSAC offers training using the internationally respected BSAC Diver Training programme. Our instructors are part of the club, involved in our trips and all our events; if you’re new to the club, you’ll be diving with those who’ve been teaching you throughout the year, ready to pass on their knowledge and experience, as well as regale you with tales of ‘old’ sea-dogs.

All of our instructors and those organising training are volunteers - all we ask is you get yourself involved - both in your training & in the club - and get yourself out diving with SUSAC.

Try dives

For new divers, it’ll all begin with a try dive – a no commitment taster of the underwater world. Here you’ll have a briefing from one of our instructors into the experience you’re about to have and the equipment you’ll be using, followed by a short dive in the controlled environment of a pool. This will give you a chance to make an informed decision about whether diving is for you.

Ocean Diver Training

Once you’ve decided SUSAC’s for you and you’re not yet a qualified diver, you’ll embark on BSACs Diver Training programme. As with other diver training agencies; this involves pool, classroom and open water elements all combined. Due to resources available SUSAC can take on up to 20 new trainees at the start of each academic year. We are always oversubscribed, so if you're keen make sure you get in contact with us early!

The costs of running the pool and classroom sessions are all part of club membership and the only costs of open water training are expenses of getting to a suitable location, hire any equipment required and a small contribution to the instructors corresponding expenses.

In order to complete the qualification you’ll need to purchase a training pack, which includes a notes on all the lessons you’ll undertake, your qualification book and ‘the Diving Manual.’ We’d stongly recommend getting this at the beginning - it makes training a lot easier and you can’t finish without it!

Sports Diver Training

Sport's Diver is the second level BSAC qualification and the next step once you've completed your basic training. It's completion opens up a whole realm of oppourtunities - more variety in the diving that can be undertaken, more independance in what you're doing and the ability to get involved in the running if trips and the options of begining instructor & Dive Leader training. You'll begin training for Sports Diver during your first year of diving with SUSAC - if you're able to get enough diving in, it's completion in a year is possible.

What if I'm already qualified?

Great! If you have a qualification from another dive organisation (PADI, CMAS etc) you can 'crossover' to BSAC with the club and continue training from the equivalent dive grade. If you're BSAC trained already, we just need to get you signed up and get you meeting other divers and get involved in our trips our training & the club.

Those who’ve dived before are welcomed with open arms by SUSAC, adding their different experiences to the club. If you’ve not dived in the UK or other temperate conditions before, we can guide you through nuances of technique and equipment which can make your experiences more enjoyable.
