Get your tickets from the Union’s Box Office – £5 a pop and what a great way to spend your Wednesday evening and then pop off to the pub or to Roar/Corp for the rest of your night! Please make sure you can swim and bring a towel and a spare t-shirt. Also, if you have any medical conditions you think may be a problem, talk to our Amazing Training Team.

It was great to see so many people at the Ultimate Fair today!

Hope to see lots of you at the Try Dives on Wednesday 15th (don’t forget to get your tickets from the box office) and the Information Meeting on Thursday 16th, Hicks Lecture Theatre 10 7pm. At the Information Meeting you can learn all about who we are, what we do and where we go diving. You also get the chance to ask us any questions you have in person.

Give it a Go: SCUBA Diving with SUSAC

Ever wanted to try out SCUBA Diving, but weren’t sure if you would like it? Don’t want to commit to it? Want to try it out first? Then this is for you! SUSAC offers you our world-famous* Try Dives, where you can try out SCUBA diving in a safe environment, with no commitment required, for only £5! Simply bring a towel, swimwear, and a spare t-shirt for wearing in the water, and you too can feel what it’s like to breathe underwater. This event will take place on the 15th of February 2012.

Meet at 7pm in the students union entrance for SCUBA fun-times, and we’ll take you to Ponds Forge, our training pool in Sheffield. Tickets are available from the Sheffield Students Union Box Office at the link below, and must be bought in advance. Be quick to avoid disappointment!

Please be aware that you must be able to swim, and you must not have any disqualifying medical conditions, a list of which is available on request from trai...@susac.com. If you cannot meet these conditions we may not be able to give you a Try Dive, and that would be sad. Come along to the Try Dives, and give SCUBA a go!

Menai Bridge – November 2011

Menai Bridge, Anglesey, Wales (5th-6th November 2011)

Accommodation:Bangor Travelodge
Skipper: Scott Waterman, Protector
Dive sites: The wrecks of the Delphina, Hoveringham and Cartahenia and the seal dive at Puffin Island.
Divers: Emma Keeley, Gareth Jones, Chris Aspinal, Martin Wilson, Duncan Gilby, Ross Peel, Mike Koziara.
Water conditions: Flat calm and good viz!
Weather conditions: Unbelievably good, blue skies and sunshine and no wind!

Emma says:

In all honesty I wasn’t expecting much from this trip, having just landed back from a trip to the Philippines I was expecting an icy return to UK diving. I was actually very pleasantly surprised by clear blue skies and sunshine in North Wales in November and a fantastic trip!

The Travelodge provided clean, warm rooms at a cheap price. Breakfast isn’t included in the room price but is available next door in the Little Chef. Martin and Ross found a pretty good pub, the Vaynol Arms, which is a short drive from the Travelodge and has good, reasonably priced food.

The Delphina had the potential to be a really good dive, but to get the most out of it you should really take plenty of gas and nitrox to get a decent amount of bottom time. Not suitable for single 12L! In contrast the Hoverinham is extremely shallow, starting in 6m with the tide going out throughout the dive. The top of the boat is actually clear of the surface and you can surface in air pockets inside the hull. The seals at Puffin Island weren’t as numerous or as keen to play as they have been at other times of the year, but still good fun playing with the ones that were around. The final dive of the trip was the Cartahenia, another good wreck but again fairly deep so plan your gas well.

Great news for all trainees and instructors! The new theory training programme for the Spring 2012 season is now available online from our training calendar page! http://www.susac.com/training/. For anyone wanting Ocean Diver or Sports Diver training, all lecture and exam dates are now available.

In related news, a brand new theory lecture stream will be coming online for anyone who has finished their sports diver training. These supplementary lectures cover areas of diving specific and generic, both within SUSAC and beyond. Currently planned lectures include:

Wreck appreciation
Marine life identication
Chartwork and weather
SUSACs Favourite Dive Sites
